Title of book: why we sleep
Author: Matthew Walker
My rating: 5 stars

Just finished reading this book that I bought as a birthday present as i was gifted a waterstones gift card by my sister. I had my eye on this book for a while and I had already read a chapter of this book inside the store. This book is on the recommended reading list of Bill Gates which you would find on Gates Notes.

Now onto my review of this book. This book was an interesting read and I would definitely recommend it to science/ psychology/ health students. What I learnt from this book is that there is alot more to just obtaining around 8 hours of sleep per night. A person will go through light NREM sleep, Deep NREM sleep to REM sleep till wakefulness. These are the four stages of sleep and it has been found that some people have disturbed sleep in these stages such as those with Austism Spectrum Disorder. It has been found that not getting enough sleep can cause Alzheimers and Cancer. In Alzheimers the amyloid cells which are proteins target the brain where memories are made.

Driving and not having the right amount of sleep can mean the driver wont react at all under microsleep which is a cause of fatal road accidents. Furthermore, teenagers are more likely to be involved in road traffic accidents since they have early school times and havent had enough sleep and drive. They also display symptoms similar to ADHD.

This book also includes chapters on sleeping drugs and sleep disorders.

It tells us the story of two brothers on the autism spectrum, one who has written the book and the other providing illustrations.  Both brothers are on opposite ends of the spectrum ranging from mild to severe symptoms of the illness.  Thomas who suffers from aspergers also known as mild autism suffers from alot of difficulties from getting bullied at school and having meltdowns, to not sustaining relationships and struggling with his independence. On the other hand, Jack who suffers from autism severely, relies on his routine which is to go to college, can communicate very little verbally by using repeated phrases (echolalia) and has picky eating habits. He hasnt gone through the same social spindle as his brother as he hasnt faced bullying even though outsiders do feel his stimming is rather odd.  Both brothers share the same love for trains and relian
